Is Your Website Your Hardest-Working Employee?
For small businesses and nonprofits here in Eastern Iowa, a website should be more than just an electronic brochure. It should be your most reliable, 24/7 employee. It’s the one greeting potential customers at 2 AM, answering their questions, and showing them exactly why your business is the right choice. But just like any star employee, it needs the right skills and support to be effective.
Many businesses invest in a great-looking site, which is a fantastic start. But if nobody can find it, or if it’s complicated to use, it’s like having a great storefront on a back road nobody travels. Your website needs to work for you, attracting visitors and turning them into loyal customers.
It’s Not Just About Looks, It’s About Results
At Team 218, we build websites that do more than just sit there. We focus on a complete strategy that helps you grow.
- Web Design & Development: We build professional, easy-to-navigate websites that look great on a phone or a desktop. This is the solid foundation – your business’s home base.
- SEO Services: This is how you get found. We use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to help your business show up on Google when people in your area are looking for what you do. It’s the difference between being on Main Street and being hidden away.
- Social Media Marketing: This is how you connect with your community. We help you use social platforms to engage with customers, share your story, and drive traffic back to your website. It’s the modern, Iowa nice way to network.
- Website Management: A website isn’t a “set it and forget it” tool. It needs regular updates, security checks, and fresh content to stay secure and effective. We handle the technical side so you can focus on running your business.
What a small business website actually costs in Iowa
Most agencies will not put a number on a page. Here is ours, because the guessing wastes everyone’s time.
A custom WordPress site for an Iowa small business generally runs $2,500 to $8,000, depending on page count, whether you need ecommerce or booking, and how much content has to be written from scratch. Ongoing care after the first year is $60 per month, invoiced annually at $720. SEO, if you want it, runs $300 to $800 monthly. Nonprofit projects typically land between $1,500 and $4,000.
Full detail is on the pricing page, including what pushes a project between the lower and higher ends.
What moves a project toward the higher end:
- Ecommerce, booking, or membership functionality. Anything that takes money or schedules time adds real complexity and real testing.
- Content that does not exist yet. If you have no photos and no written copy, that is work someone has to do.
- Multiple service areas that each need genuine, distinct content rather than the same page with the town name swapped.
- Migration from a platform that fights you, especially proprietary builders that make exporting difficult on purpose.
What keeps it at the lower end: a clear idea of your services, existing photos of your work, and a willingness to launch with eight strong pages instead of thirty mediocre ones.
We do not take deposits. You are invoiced once, at launch, after you have seen the finished site. That is unusual, and it is deliberate: it puts the risk on us rather than you.
What is included that usually is not
- Twelve months of care included with every build. Backups, security monitoring, plugin updates, and uptime checks for the first year, at no additional cost.
- You own everything. Domain, hosting account, and licenses stay in your name. If you leave, you take the site with you. We have rescued enough businesses locked out by a previous developer to make this non-negotiable.
- No SEO plugin bloat. Meta tags, schema, and redirects are handled in code, which is faster and does not break when a plugin updates.
- Accessibility to WCAG 2.1 AA. Not an upsell.

How the process actually goes
Four steps, and you will know where things stand at each one.
- Discovery. We ask what your business does, who buys from you, and what the website has to accomplish. Mostly we listen. A site built without this ends up being about the business owner rather than the customer.
- Structure before design. Page architecture, what lives where, and how someone finds the thing they came for. This is the step most cheap sites skip, and it is why they do not convert.
- Build on WordPress. Real content, real photos, tested on phones first because that is where most of your visitors are.
- Launch, then a year of care. Already paid for. We watch it, update it, and fix what breaks.
Typical timeline is four to eight weeks from first call to launch, and the pace is usually set by how quickly content and photos come together, not by us.
The three things that decide whether a small business site works
After a decade of building these in Iowa, the pattern is consistent. Sites that produce customers get three things right, and sites that do not usually miss at least one.
- It is obvious what you do and where you do it, within three seconds. Not a slogan. “Residential and commercial electrical work in Cedar Rapids and Marion” beats “Powering your future” every time, because the visitor is deciding whether to keep reading.
- There is one clear next step on every page. Call, request a quote, book. Not six competing buttons. Oli Gardner’s conversion-centered design principle applies here directly: a page with one job outperforms a page with five.
- It loads fast on a phone on a bad connection. Rural Iowa LTE is the real test, not your office wifi. A site that takes six seconds has lost the visitor before your content matters.
Everything else, the animations, the stock photography, the clever copy, is secondary to those three. We would rather build a plain site that gets those right than a beautiful one that does not.
When you probably do not need us
Saying this costs us work occasionally and saves everyone time:
- If you need three pages and a contact form, and you are comfortable with software, a DIY builder is a reasonable answer. Come back when it stops fitting.
- If your website is fine and your Google Business Profile is empty, fix the profile first. It will do more for your phone than a redesign will. Our local SEO guide walks through it, and you can do it yourself in an hour.
- If you are pre-revenue and testing an idea, spend the money on finding out whether people want the thing before you spend it on presenting the thing.
Frequently asked questions
What services does Team 218 offer?
Web design and development, SEO, social media marketing, and ongoing website management, for small businesses and nonprofits. Most clients start with a website and add the rest only if it makes sense for them.
Where are you located?
Williamsburg, Iowa, between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids on I-80. We work with businesses throughout Eastern Iowa and across the state, and we have been doing it since 2014.
Why does SEO matter for a small business?
Because a website nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. SEO is how a customer searching “plumber near me” in Marion or “wedding venue Iowa County” ends up on your site instead of a competitor’s. For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile and the website work together, and neither does much alone.
How long until I see results?
A new site is live in four to eight weeks. Search visibility takes longer: local rankings in a smaller Iowa market often move within one to three months, competitive metro terms take three to six. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is selling something.
Do I have to sign a long-term contract?
No. We use contracts, because both sides should know what was agreed, but there is no long-term lock-in. Care plans are month to month after the first year, and you can leave whenever you want with everything you own intact.
What if I already have a website?
Then the first question is whether it needs rebuilding or just fixing. Sometimes the honest answer is that your site is structurally fine and needs speed work and better content, which costs far less than a rebuild. A free audit will tell you which it is, and we will say so either way.
