Responsive Website Design
What It Is and Why It’s Important
Responsive Website Design – relatively recent terminology that plays a critical role in current website design. Just a few short years ago, most websites were pretty simple and the only way to read a web page was to use a desktop computer. Technology has rapidly changed the way we consume information online. We now have a wide variety of devices available to surf the web. PCs, tablets, smartphones, and wearables are all options for online access.
It’s not practical to design a different web page for each of these different devices. So how do you make sure your website is accessible to all of them? Enter Responsive Website Design. Instead of needing a different page for each device, Responsive Website Design uses a bit of code known as a media query to determine the screen size of the device reading the page and then adjusts the layout of the page to match the device. Another approach is Fluid Design where the normal px unit or measurement is replaced by Vw (viewport width) and vh (viewport height). These units or measurement represent exactly 1% of the viewport size regardless of its’ measurements. Fluid designs adapt automatically based on the size of the available screen real estate.

We believe that every business needs a website. But just having a website isn’t good enough anymore. It’s critical to have a website that is “Mobile Friendly“. Why is that important? Because Google says so. Google is placing more and more importance on websites that it considers Mobile Friendly. They even have a Mobile Friendly test. You can go there and use their tool to check any website and see if it passes their test and qualifies as mobile friendly.
We use responsive design technology to build Responsive Websites that look great on any device. That’s important not only because of Google’s algorithm but also because so much more traffic is coming from tablets, smartphones, and wearable devices. Now might be the time to think about updating or even redesigning your website. If your site is more than 3 years old you might be surprised to know that some of the technology used to build it may be outdated and no longer used. Things change fast in the online world and using outdated technology can cause low search rankings and even expose your website to security threats.
If you find yourself thinking your website might be getting a little long in the tooth, or you have failed Google’s Mobile Friendly test, we’d be happy to take a look at it and give you our opinion – no charge.
